What does Reachable/Unreachable mean?
In Business Engine, network elements can display a Reachable or Unreachable status. This status provides an indication of the connection between an Object and the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This article explains how the Reachable/Unreachable status is determined, what influences its updates, and how it relates to provisioning system events.
What does Reachable/Unreachable mean?
-
Reachable: The object is connected to the ONT and the provisioning system reports that the link is active.
-
Unreachable: The provisioning system reports that the link is inactive or not detected.
You can view more details about downtime and status in the Element downtime section when inspecting a Network element.
How is the status updated?
-
The OSS/BSS system synchronizes with the provisioning system based on its configuration.
-
During each sync, the system checks the ont-state field on the ONT intent.
-
The synchronization interval can vary (for example, every 15 minutes), depending on the provisioning system setup.
⚠️ Important: Even if the sync runs every 15 minutes, the provisioning system may return a cached value. As a result, the Reachable/Unreachable status in the backend (BE) may take longer than expected to update.
Relationship between Reachable and Link Status
-
Reachable = Link Status.
-
The Up/Down link status is based on real-time events from the provisioning system:
-
Up → sets the Reachable flag (object becomes Reachable).
-
Down → clears the Reachable flag (object becomes Unreachable).
-
Do objects need to be Deliverable to become Reachable?
No. The Reachable badge is independent of the Deliverable status. As soon as the object is connected to the ONT and the provisioning system reports an active link, the object is marked as Reachable.
Summary
-
Reachable/Unreachable is determined by the ONT connection state reported by the provisioning system.
-
Sync intervals depend on configuration, but cached values may delay updates.
-
Link Status (Up/Down) directly drives the Reachable flag.
-
Deliverable status is not required for an object to be Reachable.
